PersonajeleThe characters
Three brothers, a father, a servant who may be the fourth son — and the town watching them. Each portrait opens a profile with the character's story.
De ce au unii câte trei nume? Why do some of them have three names?
A nineteenth-century Russian carries three names: a first name, a patronymic (the father's name, with the suffix -ovich/-evich for sons and -ovna/-evna for daughters) and a family name. “Dmitri Fyodorovich Karamazov” is Dmitri, son of Fyodor, of the Karamazov family.
On top of that, almost everyone has a pet name used by those close to them — Dmitri is “Mitya”, Alexei is “Alyosha”, Katerina is “Katya”. The site always uses the short form the character is actually called by in the book, not the full official name. In English the names follow the usual transliteration of English translations (Alyosha, Grushenka), not the Romanian one (Alioșa, Grușenka).
A detail that is no accident: the servant Smerdyakov also bears the patronymic “Fyodorovich” — the same as the three brothers. His name alone suggests what the novel barely says outright.
