A novice at the monastery; the moral centre of the book and witness to everyone.
Everyone loves him, not because he is naive but because he judges no one. He entered the monastery not to flee the world but to find a way towards it, and the elder Zosima sends him back among people just when he would like to stay. He is the only one in the family in whom the others can recognise their better selves without shame. When his faith is shaken by the elder's death, his crisis is not a loss but a passage from an inherited faith to a lived one.

Mănăstirea și schitulThe monastery and the hermitageLa marginea orașului, dincolo de râu. On the edge of town, across the river. The elder Zosima lives here; the family gathers here for a reconciliation that turns into a scandal; and here, too, Alyosha loses his faith and finds it again.

Îi place gândul că are un fiu care se roagă pentru el.Alyosha is the only person who has never humiliated him and in front of whom the old man feels no need to play the buffoon. He likes the idea of having a son who prays for him.

To Alyosha he confesses both his baseness and his love, without asking forgiveness. He is the only person in front of whom Dmitri does not pretend.

The brothers who talk in the tavern about the suffering of children and about the Grand Inquisitor. Ivan lays out all his doubt; Alyosha kisses him, as Christ kissed the Inquisitor.

He teaches him that each of us is guilty before all, then sends him back into the world just when he would like to stay. His death shakes Alyosha's faith so that it can become his own.

He warns him that the world outside will test his faith with arguments, not temptations. He stays behind him, silent, when everyone else is swept along by the scandal.
Antagonism
The seminarian takes him to Grushenka for twenty-five roubles, hoping to watch him fall. He explains everything by social causes and understands nothing.

The boy bit him until he bled without saying why, because Alyosha bore the name of the man who had humiliated his father. Alyosha neither struck back nor asked.

The thirteen-year-old repeats ideas he does not fully understand, afraid only of being ridiculous. Alyosha takes him seriously, and that changes him more than any lesson.

She wants to corrupt him and ends up telling him the fable of the onion. Each sees the other as better than they had believed, and both are changed on the same evening.

Her fantasies of cruelty are a miniature version of Ivan's questions.
