It is a map along three paths — the timeline, the town, the characters — built from texts, illustrations and data, all of them original.

TraducerileThe translations

Romanul a apărut în 1880, iar originalul rus, ca orice text vechi de peste un secol, e în domeniul public. Citatele de pe acest site — din /citate, de pe fișele personajelor, din rezultatul quiz-ului — sunt traducerea mea de lucru după acel original, nu un fragment preluat dintr-o ediție românească publicată.The novel appeared in 1880, and the Russian original, like any text more than a century old, is in the public domain. The quotes on this site — in /citate, on the character profiles, in the quiz result — are my own working translation of that original into Romanian, not an excerpt from a published Romanian edition. The English versions are working translations of those Romanian texts, not quotes from a published English translation; in English, every quote is shown together with its Romanian text.

PortreteleThe portraits

Cele 23 de personaje n-au poze — n-ar fi avut sens: n-a existat nicio fotografie a lor, iar o imagine reală ar fi fost un furt de imagine de undeva. În loc de asta, fiecare portret e generat din cod, dintr-o configurație scurtă — formă de față, ten, păr, barbă, haine, accesorii, expresie, fundal — desenată din piese SVG comune tuturor personajelor. Același desen e refolosit la trei mărimi: bust, avatar, medalion.The 23 characters have no photos — that would make no sense: no photograph of them ever existed, and a real image would have been borrowed from somewhere without permission. Instead, every portrait is generated in code from a short configuration — face shape, complexion, hair, beard, clothes, accessories, expression, background — drawn from SVG pieces shared by all the characters. The same drawing is reused at three sizes: bust, avatar, medallion.

Orașul real din spatele ficțiuniiThe real town behind the fiction

Skotoprigonievsk, orașul din roman, e inventat — dar Dostoievski l-a modelat după Staraia Russa, orașul în care și-a petrecut opt veri și a scris cea mai mare parte a cărții. Harta reală de pe /harta — râurile Polist, Porusya, Pererâțița, Malașka, clădirile — e reconstruită din cercetare: poziția lor unele față de altele e cea reală, nu un fundal generic de hartă.Skotoprigonyevsk, the town in the novel, is invented — but Dostoevsky modelled it on Staraya Russa, the town where he spent eight summers and wrote most of the book. The real map on /harta — the rivers Polist, Porusya, Pererytitsa and Malashka, the buildings — is reconstructed from research: their positions relative to one another are the real ones, not a generic map background.
