Pavel Fiodorovici SmerdiakovPavel Fyodorovich Smerdyakov

Slujitorul casei, fiu nerecunoscut; ucigașul adevărat. The household servant, an unacknowledged son; the real murderer.

Born to the mute Lizaveta in the Karamazovs' garden and raised out of pity by Grigory, he has spent his whole life between servant and son, never fully either. Epileptic, meticulous, with a cold contempt for everything around him, he learned cooking in Moscow and manners from no one. He listens to Ivan's theories with an attention no one else gives them, and he takes them all the way. When he confesses he does not ask for forgiveness: he asks to be recognised as someone's pupil.

The servant's room, next to the kitchen. The conversations with Ivan take place here, the fake epileptic fit is planned here, and here everything will end with a confession and a noose.

He cooks for him, keeps his keys and is considered a nobody.

    Ivan

The servant listens to his theories with an attention no one else gives them and takes them all the way. “You were the one who knew everything” — and here Ivan's madness begins.

He raised him out of pity and taught him to read, and his reward was contempt. “You are an outcast,” the old man tells him after the servant mocks Holy Scripture.
