Fiodor Pavlovici KaramazovFyodor Pavlovich Karamazov
The family's debauched patriarch; his death sets the whole novel in motion.
A landowner who grew rich out of nothing, building his fortune from swallowed humiliations and petty calculations. He abandoned his three legitimate sons one after another, leaving them to the servants, and can barely remember how many he has. He plays the buffoon with an almost voluptuous pleasure: he humiliates himself before anyone else gets the chance, turning shame into a weapon. At sixty he is fighting his eldest son over the woman he has fallen for, and that battle will be fatal to him.

An old, roomy, badly kept house with shutters he opens only for Grushenka. All the quarrels over money and women take place here, and here its master will be found dead.

They quarrel over an inheritance each reckons differently and over the same woman. The old man keeps three thousand roubles ready for Grushenka; the son believes the money is his. Everything comes out of this quarrel.

The only son the old man is a little afraid of and listens to. Ivan stays in the house longer than he would like, and his leaving is the last thing his father asks of him.

Îi place gândul că are un fiu care se roagă pentru el.Alyosha is the only person who has never humiliated him and in front of whom the old man feels no need to play the buffoon. He likes the idea of having a son who prays for him.

Antagonism
Miusov, a man of European manners, cannot forgive Fyodor Pavlovich for existing. The scandal at the monastery is, for him, a personal disgrace.
